The mountains on Marrakech's horizon
The High Atlas rises just south of the city and is visible from Marrakech on clear days. Its highest peak, Jbel Toubkal, reaches 4,167 metres, the highest point in North Africa. The mountain villages around Asni and Imlil, roughly 65 km from Marrakech, are usually about an hour and a half away by road.
Berber villages and valleys
The road climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge to a landscape of terraced fields, walnut trees and villages of stone and earth houses clinging to the slopes. From Imlil, footpaths lead into the valleys of the Toubkal National Park and to nearby villages, through scenery that changes with each season.
From Asni to Imlil
Asni is a market town where several valleys meet and where the road to Imlil branches off. Imlil, at about 1,740 metres, is the main starting point for walks into the Toubkal National Park. Climbing Jbel Toubkal itself is a separate adventure that usually takes two days with a night in a mountain refuge, so a day trip focuses on the villages and valleys below.
A region rebuilding
The Al Haouz region, where these villages are, was hit by the earthquake of September 2023. Reconstruction is still under way in places. Visiting with local guides and drivers helps bring income back to the mountain communities.
Seasons
Spring brings blossom and green terraces, summer is pleasantly cooler than the city, autumn is clear and calm, and winter often brings snow to the peaks, with cold days in the villages.
Practical tips
- Wear walking shoes: village paths are steep and uneven.
- Bring layers; temperatures drop quickly with altitude.
- Dress modestly in the villages and ask before photographing people.
What a particular trip includes, how long you stay and which stops it makes depend on the option you book. They are shown under Ways to do this trip once dates and prices are published.
